Russell Sets New Track Record in Qualifying...Caught up in Accident while Leading Season Finale at CNB Bank Raceway Park -
September 16th 2013
Nathan Russell added to his young but rather impressive resume as he set a New Track Record in Qualifying at the CNB Bank Raceway Park in Clearfield, PA Saturday Evening.
Russell has been impressive in each of his 3 visits to the 5/8 mile speedway in Central Pennsylvania. This time time would be no different as he posted a time of 17.491 seconds in qualifying, setting a New Track Record in the process.
"That was a fast lap," said Russell as he climbed out of his #75 VSI Racing Chevy. "We were really happy in practice, and we didn't leave much on the table with that lap," he said with a smile. "I'm really looking forward to the race tonight."
Russell and his #75 VSI Racing Team were looking like the car to beat after sitting atop the speed charts in practice, backing it up in qualifying, and then finding out the field would start "heads up" for the track's 100 lap finale.
When the green waved Russell quickly took over the point position. He would be followed by the #32 of Glenn Gault Jr (winner of the previous 100 lap event) and the #48 of Sam Fullone (winner of the season's first 100 lap event) as the three set a torrid pace for the first few laps.
It looked as if the top-3 were starting to settle in place, when suddenly a slower car they were approaching exploded an engine right in front of them. Russell was the first to hit the oil and it sent him shooting head on into the turn 1 wall. The others had just a second to react when they saw Russell's car hit the oil and everyone else managed to slow before hitting it.
The hard crash would end Russell's night.
"That was pretty disappointing," said a visibly distraught Russell after the crash. "I was pretty hopeful that tonight was going to be our night. We've been strong here every time out, and today we really were on top of things."
"We had a great start, and I was just starting to settle in as we were starting to talk about saving the car for the first half of the race. Then all the sudden I hit turn one, and the car just took off towards the wall. It was a pretty hard hit, but I'm fine. Just really disappointed. We really wanted to get a win here in Pennsylvania this year, but I guess there isn't a lot you can do about stuff like that."
Russell and the team are working towards finishing out the 2013 season and announcing their 2014 plans in the near future. Keep up with everything about Nathan Russell and the VSI Racing Team right here at the official website of Nathan Russell www.GoNathanRussell.com!
Russell Qualifies 2nd Finishes 3rd in 100 Lap Event at CNB Bank Raceway Park
August 19th 2013
Nathan Russell and the #75 VSI Racing Team had another strong run in his hometown Central Pennsylvania Region Sunday afternoon at the CNB Bank Raceway Park.
“It was a pretty good day for our VSI Racing Team,” said Russell. “You always want to get the win, but coming home with a 3rd place finish was still pretty decent.”
Russell Qualified 2nd in what was the strongest field of the year at the 5/8 mile oval in Clearfield, PA. He slipped back a little in the early going as he battled a tight car through the first 50 laps.
“We were just a little too tight in the center,” Russell said. “So we settled in and just worked to stay near the front until the halfway break.”
He would end the first 50 lap segment in the 6th position. After the restart he would slowly start to work his way back up through a very solid top-5 group of cars.
“Once we made the adjustments it was a new race for us. This place has a great layout for passing cars, the problem was how strong the top group of cars were today.”
Russell made it all the way up to 3rd by lap 90, but the top 2 had already put some distance on the field and he would end the afternoon with a 3rd place finish. Glenn Gault from Hubbard, OH would take the win, followed by Bob Weber of New York then Russell. The spring race winner Sam Fullone, also of New York, would finish 5th.
Russell finished up with a smile. “We just needed a little more time or maybe another restart, but overall it was a good day for the VSI Racing Team.”
After Qualifying 3rd Russell Breaks in Piney VI at Motordrome Speedway
August 11th 2013
Nathan Russell and the #75 VSI Racing Team had another impressive outing Friday Night at Motordrome Speedway in Smithton, Pennsylvania, but things were cut short with a suspension failure in the 100 Lap Main Event.
"We had a really good car in practice and qualifying," said Russell after climbing out of the #75 VSI Racing Car. "I could tell something wasn't right early in the race and we started to fall back a little, finally a piece in the suspension gave out and luckily we were able to keep it off the wall. You never like to end the night like this, but we were really fast and that's always a positive."
Nathan and the #75 VSI Racing Team will be back in action SUNDAY AUGUST 18th at the CNB Bank Raceway Park in Clearfield PA for the 100 Lap Event.
Nathan Russell finishes 6th in Trupar 100 at Motordrome Speedway
July 15th 2013
Nathan Russell and the #75 VSI Racing Team added another solid run to their 2013 resume Friday Night at Motordrome Speedway in Smithton, Pennsylvania, posting a 6th place finish in the Trupar 100 Late Model Event.
"We were just a little bit off tonight," said Russell
after the 100 lap event. "The competition is pretty tough anytime you
come here, and a tenth of a second is the difference between running
first and being outside the top-10. We were really close and ended up
6th, we just needed a little more than we had... but overall it was
still a solid run for our VSI Team."
"We changed some things since our last trip here and were hoping to dial that in during practice," said Russell. "But with the rain, it made it a little tough. We made some good changes between the short practice and qualifying, then a few more before the race, we just needed about one more and I think we would have had a shot at the win."
Russell started the 100 lap event from the 9th position and slowly worked his way up through the field during the first half of the event.
"We started out pretty decent, its tough to pass here, but I was able to work the outside pretty well," said Russell.
It was about lap 55 when his charge started to flatted out. He battled back and forth between the 5th and 8th positions over the last 40 laps, and when the checkered flag fell he was edged across the line by the 5th place car of Scott Baker.
"We just tapered off the last 45-50 laps. We were a little tight and I had to adjust my line to make it work. We still were fast, but just not enough to battle for the win. It was still good to get the 100 laps in, we will take what we learned and head on to the next one."
Nathan Russell comes home with Top-5 Finish in First Visit to Motordrome Speedway in 2013
July 9th 2013
The #75 VSI Racing Team made their first trip of the season to Motordrome Speedway just outside of Pittsburgh PA a success, posting a Top-5 finish in the nights main event.
"We wanted to get some laps in at this place since we are coming back for this big race next week," said Russell. "I've ran here before, but you can always learn more. We found a few things, and I'm pretty excited about coming back here for the 100 lap event next week."
Nathan and VSI Racing Team will be back in action this week as they make a return trip to Motordrome Speedway for the Trupar 100.
Nathan Russell Puts on an Exciting Show in the Dodge Dealer's 100 at CNB Bank Raceway Park
June 23rd 2013
In what may have been one of the best finishes ever at the fame 5/8 mile speedway in Central Pennsylvania, Veteran Sam Fullone of New York and Nathan Russell gave the fans a final 10 lap battle that will be talked about for years!
"We really wanted to win here tonight," said a slightly disappointed but still smiling Russell after climbing out of the #75 VSI Racing Ford after the 100 lap event.
"We put a lot of time into this car, came and tested, and my crew chief Dan really had things dialed in for today. It's tough to come away without the win, but it sure was fun to run like we did tonight."
It was a strong day for the #75 VSI Racing Team. They were in the top 3 during the afternoon practice sessions and in qualifying Russell ran a flawless lap that put them on the pole for the night's main event.
An invert of the top 4 qualifiers would see Russell take the green from the 4th position. Within a lap he was moving into the 2nd position when the leader got loose off turn 4 and caused a chain reaction of checking up for most of the top-10. Russell was sent spinning as he got into the #48 and then was hit himself from behind, the incident caught up a few of the top-10 cars, causing just slight damage to a few, but Russell appeared to get the worst of it.
After some pit work by the #75 VSI Team Russell would restart from the back of the field. He settled back in and patiently went back to work picking his way through the field one car at a time through the first half of the event. At the halfway break Russell had made it all the way back to the 2nd position.
As the 2nd half got under way, he made a charge at the leader (#48 Sam Fullone of New York). For 10 laps they battled side by side until Russell had to settle back into 2nd and cool his tires.
A restart on lap 90 setup a shootout. When the green flag waived Russell made his move under the #48 of Fullone, the two battled side by side for 5 laps before Russell took the lead. With just 3 laps to go Fullone dove to the inside of Russell and the two swapped the lead back and forth door to door over the next 2 laps.
Fullone held a nose lead as they headed into the final turn, Russell drove it in hard on the outside and edge ahead, but the car broke loose as he got back into the throttle and sent him for a spin coming off turn 4. Fullone took the checkered and Russell ended up crossing the line 6th.
"It was a tough way to end it, but what an awesome run," Nathan said. "My crew did a great job, we had an awesome car. We got our first pole of the season, and passed every car here tonight. It's just too bad we got caught up in that early spin. I knew I was using up that right rear working my way through the field, and it just didn't have enough grip to make it off that last corner."
"It was a good night for our VSI Team, and now we will look forward to our next event in a few weeks."

Nathan and the VSI Racing Team On-Track for some NASCAR Testing
May 6th 2013
The VSI Racing Team headed to CNB Bank Raceway Park this week for some testing with the new #75 NASCAR K&N Series Car.
"We made a lot of changes after Richmond and really needed to get some more track time in the car," said Nathan. "We spend a lot of time in the shop getting everything right, all the suspension, the shocks, springs, geometry, and even when you have it just exactly the way you want it.... sometimes it just doesn't work out as planned."
"My crew chief Dan worked through some things these last 2 weeks and we think we are onto something. It seemed to work out pretty well today. Once we get back to the shop I'm sure we will go over the notes and make a few changes to bring back next time."
Tough Outing for Nathan and the VSI Racing Team at Richmond
April 28th 2013
Nathan Russell and the VSI Racing Team had a tough weekend in their first trip to the famed Richmond International Raceway for the NASCAR K&N Series "Blue Ox 100".
The weekend saw one of the strongest field of cars ever turn out for a NASCAR K&N Series Event.
"This was our first time at Richmond, and I'll say this place is really something," said Nathan just after the afternoon qualifying session. "We worked through practice but just couldn't seem to get things dialed in to where we had hoped. I got into 3 a little too hard and it hurt both of our laps. It's something you learn, not something you want to learn - but that's what you have to do."
"It was great to be out here with all the Cup and Nationwide guys today, these are the guys we are going to be competing against throughout the season and you just have to be at the top of your game. It was a great experience and we will go from here and work on the rest of the season!"
